‘The future looks bright for our fishers”: SIA congratulates the Coalition on election win

Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), the national peak-body representing the Australian seafood industry, has congratulated the Coalition on winning the Federal Election and looks forward to working together on issues critical to the seafood industry.

“We congratulate the Morrison Government on retaining their leadership following Saturday’s election,” SIA CEO Jane Lovell said.

“We look forward to helping shape their Commonwealth Fisheries Resource Sharing Framework. Resource security is a very significant issue for commercial fishers and is extremely complicated with multiple jurisdictions and multiple users.

“For too long our sector has lacked a clear vision for growth. We have high hopes for the  National Fisheries Plan, which will deliver a new sector blueprint, to take our industry forward and help us increase the amount of Aussie seafood available for our community and for international consumers.

“The Morrison Government commitment to help us help those in our sector who suffer from mental health issues has come not a moment too soon. This must be the first priority – to get this assistance rolled out and delivered to those in need.

“Perhaps the greatest relief for our industry is that the Commonwealth Marine Park Management Plans will remain as they are, averting the unnecessary upheaval and uncertainty that would’ve ensued with Labor’s promise to reinstate their rejected 2012 Marine Park Management Plans.

“As an industry and a community we welcome the implementation of these election promises. We also make a commitment to ensure we remain at the forefront of the political agenda and protect and promote our industry.”
