Josh Pearce and Renee Vajtauer opened The Fish Shoppe in South Melbourne Market on March 21, 2018.
Priding themselves on stocking sustainable seafood, Josh and Renee sell product sourced only from Australian or New Zealand waters and complete background checks on species and fisheries before stocking.
“Australia and New Zealand have the world’s best standards in fisheries management, and by supplying our customers with only seafood from these two great islands they can rest assured that there’s fish for the future,” Renee said.
Having been in operation for a just shy of one year, The Fish Shoppe has already proved to be a success with a reputation for quality seafood and a loyal customer base.
Josh and Renee plan to push themselves one step further and become Australia’s first post-harvest retailer to obtain MSC Chain of Custody.
“I have a passion for local product and supporting local fisherman that focus on their quality of catch, environmental impact and overall best operating practices that ensure the sustainability of the fish-stocks for the future,” Josh said.
Renee has been working within the Australian seafood industry for more than 10 years in advocacy roles, most recently as the Executive Officer for the Commonwealth Fisheries Association (CFA).
Renee’s passion for sustainability and fresh product saw her turn to post-harvest operations.
“I love to support small businesses and try to get many different seafood products into our store, you may find varieties of seafood that you have never tried before and that’s my aim,” she said.
Josh found his fins five years ago when he commenced a role as Sanford’s Wholesale Fish Market Manager and never looked back.
Renee assisted in the establishment of Seafood Industry Australia and continues to be involved in industry activities as a representative on the FRDC Fish Names Committee.
“Seafood Industry Australia is a real game changer for our industry, and I’m proud to say that I contributed,” she said.
